Live Stream Dr. Josh’s Press Conference On Monday, August 19 @ 1 PM CST

Great news. Dr. Josh has been invited to Skype in to a live press conference held by the Michigan State Government. In case you missed it, state legislators in Michigan have taken a stance for less bureaucratized healthcare. The event will be addressing this topic and related issues. There will be speakers from both House and Senate committees, and professionals in the industry. The speakers will hold a live Q&A afterwards.

The entire event will be both videotaped and broadcast live on Michigan Government TV. You can access the live feed on Monday here. (Look for the August 19 session titled 1PM. If you’re on a desktop, it’s on the top of the left column.)

Dr. Josh Breaks Down Every Facet Of Direct Care In His Latest Interview

The Objective Standard spoke with Dr. Josh and captured a comprehensive, and digestible, overview of direct care. The conversation was conducted and transcribed by journalist Ari Armstrong and is currently available as a PDF file for private use and distribution. Inaugural Direct Primary Care (DPC) Conference To Be Held In St. Louis: October 11-12, 2013

The Direct Primary Care Journal (DPCJ) released a statement confirming the first Direct Primary Care Conference hosted by the Family Medicine Education Consortium (FMEC). On October 11th – 12th, 2013, the FMEC is hosting an inaugural gathering of physicians, investors, policymakers and anyone else involved in this game-changing healthcare model. The inaugural event will take place in St. Louis, MO at the St. Louis Airport Marriott and Meeting Center. Physicians, purchasers, payers, researchers, investors, suppliers, policymakers, the media and interested parties are invited to attend.

Josh and Doug drove out to Kansas City last week where they spoke both at a private clinic, as well as on the campus of a local medical school. Some of the students had visited Atlas MD recently, so it was a chance for them to follow-up with new questions. Doug and Josh were impressed how these MBA and D.O. students were already so attuned to the business aspects of medicine.

The Future of Doctor-Patient Emails Looks Bleak, for Everyone Else

Doug Farrago’s new post on Kevin MD makes a grim prognosis for docs operating within the insurance system. Looks like they will need to answer emails more promptly or risk diminishing profits.

Farrago’s future of patient emails includes not getting paid for answering them, getting dinged if you lag when responding, possibly getting sued, making bad prognoses based on cryptic messages (which you’re expected to answer or lose patients to doctors who will), and losing money since emailing patients are skipping out on the visit.

However, Farrago mentions that Dr. Josh has solved this quandary by introducing a subscription model and limiting his patient number. As we know, Atlas MD docs take calls and emails 24/7 and as Dr. Doug told CNN Money, “My professional life is better than expected, my family life and personal time is better than expected,” he said. “This is everything I wanted out of family medicine.” In fact, Atlas MD enjoys their work so much, they’re fighting to bring direct care to the masses. It feels good to be recognized as a solution in an industry riddled with incalculable problems.

What equipment do I need to purchase to start a concierge medical practice?

Let’s be frank. You’ve likely got a plethora of machines and equipment strewn about your current practice. The machines might vary if you’re a specialist, but if you’re a family doctor you’ve obviously got thermometers, Sphygmanometer, Electrocardiogram, etc. But what do actually NEED to practice concierge medicine? In actuality, you can start with little more than a stethoscope and your phone.

You Can Still Hang Out With Dr. Josh On Google+

The bad news is that Dr. Josh will no longer be hosting his regularly scheduled Google+ Hangouts, though. The good news is that’s because he and Dr. Doug have launched their weekly iTunes podcast. They’ll be discussing direct care start up, operation, and will do their best to answer any questions you submit to them.

However, if you still want to video chat with Josh, you can request a one-on-one hangout here. He’ll do his best to find time in his busy but flexible schedule.

Okay, So The Free Market Isn’t Exactly “Free”

First things first, The Atlantic published a Health article online recently. It’s a doozy, and after reading it, we did wonder, did it need to be this long?

However, it addresses a poignant issue: Drug companies are motivated by malleable policies that end up creating more incentive for hair regrowth drugs than ones fighting global diseases that are “Biblically”-severe i.e. malaria, Dengue fever and others.
